Developing practice skills

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to the most common customer enquiries we receive about our phlebotomy courses:

1. Q: What is the total cost of your course?

  • The total cost of our basic phlebotomy training is £325
  • The total cost of our advanced phlebotomy training course is £235
  • The total cost of our stem cell retrieval training course is £175
  • The cost for our practical mentorship varies depending on timescales and location, please contact us for more information

2. Q: Is your course recognised by the NHS?

Yes, as our training covers all 18 core competencies required for proficiency in phlebotomy as
recommended by the NHS’s Skills For Health Organisation. All of our courses are all accredited by the National Open College Network, the leading credit-based awarding body in the UK, this provides you with a nationally recognised qualification. Our courses are delivered to employees of the NHS nationwide, and some of our most regular clients include trusts such as the Birmingham Womens' Hospital Health Care Trust and Lewisham PCT. Our course has also been approved by PASA (now Buying Solutions) to be delivered to some of our most valued clients.

3. Q: What is the difference between your certificates and a certificate of competency?

A certificate of competency can only be gained whilst working as a phlebotomist. As it requires you to take a high number of bloods (around 50-100 is usual) from live patients, it is something that is earned over a long period of time in the workplace, rather than something that can be gained on a short training course. A certificate of competency with only a few live bloods would not prove you to be a competent phlebotomist.

Our accredited courses give you all the skills and knowledge required to work as a phlebotomist, as well as a tangible qualification.

4. Q: Can i take blood from live patients on your courses?

No. As our courses are all accredited by the Open College Network, we are not insured for you to take live bloods on our courses.

However, on our basic and advanced courses students spend a lot of time practicing how to withdraw blood using realistic mannequin arms and pads. These can often be harder to extract blood from than real-life patients, and it also means that students have the opportunity to learn the best practices of phlebotomy, before dealing with patients, and without risking the health & safety of other people.

5. Q: Are you a UK Registered Learning Provider?

Yes. Our provider number is: 10027822. However please be aware that although some companies try to represent the UKRLP as a form of accreditation, it does not quality assure or accredit in any way the learning provision of the provider.
