Basic Phlebotomy Training
Accredited with: The 'Open College Network North East Region'
3 Credits at Level 2
This accredited two day course covers the basic skills required to become a phlebotomist and covers all of the competencies set out in the CHS132, the National Occupational Standard for Phlebotomy, written by Skills For Health.
This course will be delivered by an experienced phlebotomist who is also a trained teacher.
Candidates require no previous experience in venepuncture or working in a Clinical Environment.
The course has a duration of 16 hours, and is conducted over two full days between 9:00am - 5:30pm. The course includes:
- Anatomy & physiology of the arm
- How to find a suitable site for venepuncture
- Correct application of the tourniquet
- Health & safety and infection control
- Working in a clinical environment
- Labelling samples
- Bottles required & order of draw
- The importance of correct identification of patients
- How to take blood (using an artificial arm)
- Final Examination & assignments

Advanced Phlebotomy for Practitioners
Accredited with: The 'Open College Network North East Region'
3 Credits at Level 3
This accredited one day course covers advanced techniques of phlebotomy. Candidates must be practising phlebotomists or health care professionals who are working in a suitable clinical environment, or must have completed our 'Basic Phlebotomy' course.
This course will be delivered by a qualified teacher who is an experienced phlebotomist, and offers delegates the opportunity to develop their existing skills.
The course has a duration of 8 hours, and is conducted between 9:00am - 5:30pm. The course includes:

Taking blood from difficult and peadiatric patients

Venepuncture of the hands and feet

The use of small gauge and butterfly needles

Cannulation

Blood cultures

Infection Control

How to deal with fainting, fits and vomiting

Practical exam and assignment

Cord Blood Retrieval Course

3 Credits at Level 3
This accredited one day course teaches delegates how to safely and effectively procure stem cells from the placenta and umbilical cord. Candidates must have completed our 'Basic Phlebotomy' course.
This course will be delivered by a qualified teacher who is experienced in procuring stem cells.
The course has a duration of 7 hours, and is conducted between 9:00am - 4:30pm. The course includes:
- Role of the Human Tissue Authority
- Stem cell retrieval sites and stem cell uses
- Anatomy of the placenta and umbilical cord
- Infection control
- Stem cell collection kits and the collection process
- Stem cell procedure with twins
- Timeline of collection process
- Assignment

Practical Mentorship
Available for practitioners In-house on request. Candidates must provide evidence of Hepatitis B cover prior to undertaking this session, and must have completed one of our accredited training courses.
Practical mentorship sessions offer candidates professional support from our experienced tutors in a real-life clinical environment. It offers candidates an opportunity to obtain bloods using the techniques which were acquired during tour accredited training courses. A log-book will be given to successful learners to record future 'live bloods'. A Certificate of Competency will be given to those who complete the log-book
